Guardian Unlimited | Columnists | George Monbiot: The price of cheap beef ...

Seems to have a strange definition of slavery - by this measure all workers during the industrial revolution would have been slaves?

  1. We had to get rid of our slaves, they were very good, but I had to make such an effort to make sure they worked hard I gave up in the end. It is far better to have servants, that way you can reward them for working hard in addition to beating them if they don't.

However, I wasn't running a business, I was just trying to keep the house tidy. I suppose in business if you pay for one fella to keep the slaves in order then you save on having to reward the servants. Yes I can see that would work.

I don't understand why people have to buy cheap meat, why doesn't everyone buy from farmers markets or direct from the farms. In fact, we had a few acres doing nothing out the back and decided to have our own herd of cattle. This way we get the best of both worlds.
